IDEAS & ADVICE
THE ULTIMATE BACK TO SCHOOL LIST
Unsure if you’ve sorted all their school essentials? We’ve got you covered with our ‘everything they could possibly need’ back to school checklist! Since the average parent in the UK spends around two hours each day getting their child ready for school, our handy list is bound to help you on those busy mornings.
KIDS'
SCHOOL UNIFORM
First thing’s first, make sure you consult your school’s uniform guidelines before you get shopping. This will help get a clearer idea of what you need, as well as keeping you aware of anything that’s not allowed. For plain shirts available in different colours, shop our girls’ schoolwear and boys’ schoolwear.
Some schools require specialist shirts or polos with the school logo on them, while others ask for plain white or another colour. You can find these at a school uniform shop or in our back to school section.
An easy option for both genders, trousers can be worn all year round and help to keep legs warm in the colder months. School uniform guides usually ask for grey or black trousers, and some have regulations about how the trousers fit, such as not being too form-fitting or not allowing branding - so make sure to check the school requirements!
Switch out their trousers for a skirt or pair of shorts in the spring and summer time. Schools often have strict regulations in place for skirts so make sure you stick to these.
Schools usually have a few options for layering, including jumpers, blazers and cardigans. If you have multiple options to choose from, speak to your child about what they would prefer. We offer jumpers, blazers and cardigans in a range of colours and styles so your child can choose the style that suits them.
Most schools don’t have regulations about your child’s coat, so you’re free to let their personality shine through. Thick coats with a hood are good for the winter time, while a lighter, waterproof jacket should do the job in the warmer months. Browse our collection of boys’ jackets and girls’ jackets.
There’s plenty of school uniform styles to choose between, including boots, sandals and ballet shoes. Take a look at our seven tips for buying school shoes to find your perfect pair.
A dress or pinafore is another great summer option for girls. These are often worn over a polo or school shirt.
SCHOOL P.E KITS
Whether they’re kicking a ball around or swimming lengths, kids need the right kit for the job. Our girls’ sportswear and boys’ sportswear contains everything they’ll need:
Plain polo shirts are usually all you’ll need in a PE kit. If a shirt with a logo is required, you can find it at your local uniform shop.
PE classes take place either indoors or outdoors, and depending on the weather conditions, the uniform that is suitable will vary. Shorts are often worn indoors, while joggers are better for outdoor activities.
Hoodies and sweatshirts are useful for keeping warm during outdoor sports. Many schools usually include these as part of the uniform, so it’s best to get them from a uniform shop, however we offer sweatshirts and hoodies that can serve well as backups should you require a spare!
Pumps are good for indoor sports, while trainers should be used outside. If your kids are going to be playing sports on the field, they may need football boots with studs.
Kids in primary school will be attending swimming lessons, so make sure they have the right swim equipment needed. A simple swimming costume or pair of shorts will do the job, and you should pick up some goggles and a hat too.
Keep everything together with a sturdy sports bag. Choose one with a couple of pockets to keep things nicely organised.
SCHOOL ACCESSORIES & ESSENTIALS
School uniform tights are usually black or clear, though they may be required in a specific colour to match the school’s theme.
Make sure your kids have comfortable and practical underwear to get them through a day at school. If they’re still young, it may be worth packing a spare pair in their school bag in case of emergencies.
In the winter time, hats, scarves and gloves are essential for keeping children warm. Find a matching set or pick out your favourites to mix and match.
School bags are essential for keeping your child’s items organised. At Next, we offer a range of high quality, stylish school bags for every taste and preference. Shop our girls’ bags and boys’ bags.
Kids' school lunch bags should be big enough to hold snacks and a lunchtime meal. It helps if they’re waterproof and are designed to keep food cool. Make sure your child also has a reusable water bottle they can fill up throughout the day.
A successful day at school can’t be had without a pencil case! Make sure you fill it with all the essential stationery your child needs for the year ahead.
Keep your child’s hair in place with bobbles, clips and other hair accessories. Just make sure they’re allowed in the school uniform guidelines.
Now you’re clued up on our back to school checklist, it’s time to get buying! Take a look at our boys’ back to school and girls’ back to school collection, or read more about the back to school essentials.
